Baku, capital of Azerbaijan situated at the Caspian Sea, has preserved a great part of its medieval fortifications. The old town (Ichari-Shahar), built on a site inhabited since the Paleolithic period and conquered and lost again by a number of different peoples throughout the centuries, is marked by Zoroastrian, Sassanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian cultures.
